Hi, I'm Helen, the maker behind 1820 Bag Co.

Every bag you see here has been designed, patterned, cut, sewn and finished, packed and shipped by me in my South Florida studio.

1820 Bag Co., began because of one frustrating moment in an airport.

While running through an airport, the strap on my laptop bag broke. It wasn't overloaded or abused, it simply wasn't built to last. Standing there with a bag that had failed when I needed it the most, I remember thinking, there has to be a better way.

That experience sparked a journey I never expected.

I dusted off an old White sewing machine and started sewing again. What began as curiosity quickly became an obsession with designing bags that could stand up to real life. Bags that could travel well, work hard and become even better with age.

Over the years, my studio has grown, my tools have changed, and my designs have evolved, but the mission has remained exactly the same.

Create honest, handcrafted bags that are built to be used, not replaced.

Why Every Bag Has a Florida Name

One of my favorite parts of creating a new design happens after the last stitch is sewn.

Every bag I make is named after a Florida city.

Because each piece is handcrafted here in Florida, it felt fitting that every design should carry a little piece of home with it. Once a new bag is finished, I pull out a list of Florida towns and cities and figure out which city name feels right.

Sometimes it's because of the personality of the bag. Sometimes it's the history behind the town.

The result is a collection that is uniquely Floridian, bags inspired by craftsmanship and built for wherever life takes you.

Made Slowly. Made Intentionally.

I don't believe in fast fashion or mass production.

Most of my bags are made in small batches, and many are made o order. Thant allows me to focus on something that's becoming increasingly rare, quality over quantity.

Every stitch has a purpose.

Every piece of leather is selected by hand.

Every finished bag is inspected before it leaves the studio.

I'd rather spend an extra hour making a bag better than spend that hour figuring out how to make it cheaper.

Materials That Get Better with TIme

I choose materials because of how they'll look years from now, not just when they're brand new.

That means using premium waxed canvas that develops character with use.

Genuine leather that soften and gains a rich patina.

Durable Cordura lining that stands up to everyday wear.

Quality hardware selected to last through years of daily adventures.

The scratches, creases, and marks yur bag earns aren't flaws.

They're part of its story.

More Than a Bag

Whether you're commuting to work, boarding a flight, heading to a local coffee shop, hiking a favorite trail, or wandering through a weekend market, I hope your bag becomes something you reach for without thinking.

Not because it's trend, but because it simply works.

Inside the Studio

Most days you'll find me surrounded by rolls of waxed canvas, stakes of leather, thread, coffee and more work-in-progress than I'd probably like to admit.

 

It's not unusual for fabric to cover every available surface while a new design takes shape while my two Vizslas supervise the day's work.

And they take their role as studio assistants very seriously.

What I Believe

I believe craftsmanship still matters. I believe buying fewer, better made products is worth it. I believe the things we carry everyday should be both beautiful and dependable.

And I believe that handmade means something because there's a real person behind every stitch.

I don't dream of becoming the biggest bag company.

I simply want to make honest bags that people will carry for years, bags that collect stories, age beautifully and remind us that well-made things are still worth making.
